Boiler repairs
No heating, no hot water, a boiler that keeps losing pressure or has a fault code on the display. Tell me what it's doing and I'll ring you back.
What to put on the form
- The make and model. Usually on the front, or on a label underneath
- Any fault code on the display, exactly as it shows
- What the pressure gauge reads, if it has one
- What it's doing: no heating, no hot water, or neither, and when it started
Worth checking before you send it
These catch people out more often than you'd think:
- Is the boiler's power switch or fused spur on?
- Is the gas on? If you've got a gas hob, does it light? If you're on a prepayment meter, is there credit on it?
- Are the thermostat and timer calling for heat? Turn the thermostat up a few degrees and give it a minute.
- In a cold snap, is the white plastic pipe coming out of the wall frozen? That's the condensate pipe, and a frozen one stops many modern boilers. Warm water (not boiling) poured slowly over it often sorts it.
If you smell gas
Don't use the form. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can, open the windows, don't touch any light switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It's free and open all the time.
FAQ
Questions. About boiler repair.
Can you come out today?
If I can, I will. Choose "Urgent" on the form so it stands out. I aim to ring you back within a couple of hours during working hours, and it's often the same day.
What about evenings and weekends?
Evenings and weekends I can sometimes still come out, but there is a call-out charge.
Is it worth repairing, or do I need a new boiler?
That depends on what's gone and how old the boiler is. I'll tell you what I'd do once I've had a look.
My boiler keeps losing pressure. What does that mean?
Usually a small leak somewhere in the system, or a fault with the expansion vessel inside the boiler. Topping it up now and then is fine; doing it every few weeks means something needs fixing.
